Day 2 Wallace - Missoula

This morning depart Spokane and travel east into Idaho, skirting the banks of Lake Coeur D' Alene as you travel east to the historic mining town of Wallace, Idaho. It is famous as the “Silver Capital of the World,” and every building in town is listed in the U.S. National Historic Register. Enjoy the Sierra Silver Mine tour, the only tour of its kind in the Northwest. It offers a rare and exciting opportunity to personally experience the underground world of mining in the richest silver district on earth. On the short trip to and from the mine portal, a narrated tour is given of Historic Wallace. Hard hats are issued at the portal and an experienced miner is your guide as you walk through the main drift of the mine. Displays and exhibits are explained so people of all ages may safely observe equipment in operation and see modern and historical techniques used to mine silver, lead and zinc. Enjoy lunch at the historic Jameson Hotel, then continue your journey eastward entering Montana for touring of the Smokejumpers Base Aerial Fire Depot near Missoula. Displays include dioramas, historical photographs, and artifacts relating to the history of firefighting in the Forest Service. Forest Service Smokejumpers give guided tours of the base and offer firsthand accounts of firefighting and smokejumping. Arrive at your hotel in Missoula with the evening free for dinner on own. BW Plus Grant Creek Inn, Missoula, MT (B,L)

DAY 3 Big Fork - Flathead River - Glacier

Depart Missoula this morning and enter the Flathead Indian Reservation with a stop at the St. Ignatius Mission. This National Historic Site was built in 1891 by American Indians and Jesuit missionaries. Adorning its walls and ceilings are 58 hand-painted murals by Brother Joseph Carignano, a self-taught artist who worked as the mission cook and handyman. Continue north to the shores of beautiful Flathead Lake for a scatter lunch on own in Big Fork. Big Fork, the “Village by the Bay” is home to wonderful art galleries and restaurants. This afternoon get your first taste of Glacier Country as you enjoy a Scenic Float Trip on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. Starting from West Glacier, you'll pass through a steep, walled canyon and see where the Middle and North Forks of the Flathead come together to form the southern tip of Glacier National Park. This is a relaxing trip for all ages. After a fun filled experience, continue along the boundary of Glacier NP on the way to East Glacier for a rest stop. Then enter Glacier National Park for a two night stay at Many Glacier Hotel located on the shores of Swiftcurrent Lake. This beautiful Swiss style lodge was constructed in 1915 and is now a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In keeping with the era in which the hotel was built, the rooms offer guests modest amenities and old-world style accommodations resulting in a one-of-a kind, National Park lodging experience. Dinner included. Many Glacier Hotel, Many Glacier, MT (B,D)
